Audrey Rose Wadsworth is the perfect young Victorian Lady. Raised to be perfect in the womanly arts, and sheltered from all of the awful and ugly things that life can offer, Audrey Rose should be content with her lot in life, and excited about the prospect of marrying someone that she will then be able to take care of to the utmost perfection.

She wants to learn the secrets of the dead, and how to help them tell their stories so that others will not fall unwilling victims to a murderer. She sneaks into her Uncle's university classes, and she is an apprentice in his Forensics Lab. And - she lives in London - where a brash murderer who has been branded Jack the Ripper is stalking women.
As Audrey Rose, her Uncle and an intriguing young man named Thomas search to find the identity of Jack the Ripper, Audrey begins to suspect that the true identity of the Ripper lies closer to her heart than she ever though possible.
