Bloom: the Overthrow Book 1

Bloom

Oppel, Kenneth.  Bloom: The Overthrow, Book 1. 2020.  Alfred A Knopf, New York, NY.

Anaya is allergic to everything.  She constantly has a runny nose and pimply skin from the allergens in the world around her.  The meds that she takes barely keep her allergies under control.  Petra, who used to be her best friend, is allergic to water.  If any water touches her skin, she immediately suffers a severe reaction. The two girls quietly detest each other,  each ignoring the other as they go about their daily lives even when their paths intersect.

And then came the rain.  It seemed to be just a normal downpour.  But the very next day a thick black grass grew up everywhere.  The grass was thick and invasive.  And nothing killed it.

Just when it seemed like nothing else could happen, huge underground pits began to open. Each pit contained plants that would eat anything that crossed it - deer, raccoons, people.

Anaya and Petra aren't affected at all by these plants.  If anything, they seem to be healthier than they have ever been.  What is their secret?  Can they put aside their differences long enough to find out if they hold the keys to defeating these strange invasive plants before they destroys the planet?

The publisher recommends this book for children ages 10 and up.
